(NOTE: John A. Bland is one of the few men who would eventually serve in the 86th Illinois during the Civil War that is known to have sat for a portrait prior to his entering the service in 1861. We are extremely fortunate to have this tin type of John. During the 3 months that John A. Bland spent with the 86th in the Nashville, Tennessee area, John is known to have spent some, perhaps all of this time, sick in the hospital. John may never have felt like sitting for a portrait. However, if he did, he may have chosen to get another "tin type" like this one, but, more likely chose to have what was called a CDV, which was a paper picture glued to a heavy card board stock, about the size of a modern day baseball card. Most of the soldiers did not stop at getting just one or two copies made, they made a dozen copies or more, sometimes, so that they could swap pictures with the friends, tentmates and messmates within their respective companies.
Then, John A. Bland survived his ailment and the war and lived well into the 20th Century. During this time, John must had his picture taken many more times. I would love to see more pictures of John A. Bland as a young man, especially one of him in uniform from his days with the 86th, but at this point, I would just love to see some more pictures of John added to his FAG site, even some of him as a 50, 60 or 70 year old man. Can anyone help me with this? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Baxter
