In 1848, Jacob Haynes came to Marion County, Iowa with his wife Elizabeth and several children. It was a long trip from Noble County, Indiana with Oxen teams pulling covered wagons. They settled in the Red Rock area, where they purchased 865 acres of land, built log houses and started farming. Jacob Haynes was soon writing to other members of their family, urging them to come to Marion County. The person receiving the letter paid the postage of ten cents. Stage Coach mail took four to five weeks to come from Indiana to Marion County, Iowa. Jacob described Marion County as healthy country, saying he had seen no one shake with the ague since arriving.
