The son of John & Mary Barbara (Corwell or a variety of spellings) Arendt, in 1860, he lived in Cumberland Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, the same township in which a large portion of the battle of Gettysburg took place. He married Mary Matilda (or Matilda Mary) Keefauver and fathered Daniel b. @1855), Jacob William Isaiah (b. 05/07/58), Clara Elizabeth (b. 11/27/58), Samuel Edward (b. 09/01/60), Anna Mary (b. 04/30/62 - married Edward Lamar Kelley), Ellen Virginia (b. 06/10/63), John Grant (b. 12/31/65), George Franklin (b. 01/12/67), Cora Clementine (b. 12/23/67), Charles (b. 11/23/68), Henry David (b. 10/23/69), Rosella Agnes (b. 11/23/70 - married George L. Allen), Isaac (b. 12/21/71), Albert Mark (b. 05/24/73), Jennie Grace (b.07/28/74), George Walter (b. 12/17/77), and Finley (b. 06/26/79).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg April 20, 1861, mustered into federal service that day in Harrisburg as a private with Co. E, 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 26, 1861.

After Mary's death in 1908, he married Jennie Lieurance, née Dupoy, and fathered Esther Hope (b. 07/16/07 - married Theodore George Yocum), Florence Marie (b. 03/02/09 - married Hiram F. Yocum), and Anna Laura (b. 08/06/10 - married Lloyd Raymond Mattocks).
