Mrs. Catherine (Gruber) Shultz, reputed to be the oldest resident of the city, died at 12:08 o'clock this morning at the home of a son, Edmund J. Shultz, 469 New Street, where she had been making her home for some years. She enjoyed excellent health despite her advanced years, and as late as Wednesday evening occupied her usual chair in her room and appeared to be in her normal condition. On Thursday, however, she manifested signs of mental agitation, and a granddaughter, Miss May Shultz, who has devotedly attended the aged lady for many years, became alarmed and sent for a physician. Despite all that could be done, however, she sank until shortly after midnight when she fell into her eternal sleep. She would have attained the 102nd year of her age on May 20th this year. She was the widow of Edmund B. Shultz, remembered by older citizens as constable of the Fourth Ward for many years. In younger years he was a carpenter at the Weimer Machine Works but, later took to serving legal writs of various kinds for court house officers and various aldermen. He died December 16, 1914.
Mrs. Shultz was born May 20, 1842, at Stouchsburg, Berks County, the daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Gruber. She was married March 31, (1866) and came to Lebanon with her husband twelve years later. She has been residing in Lebanon since 1888 – for many years of that period at 128 Cumberland Street. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church during most of the period of her residence in the city, and in her more active years was a regular attendant at the church services. She was the oldest member of the congregation. She was the mother of eight children – only two of whom survive her. In addition to the son with whom she lived, another, Harry B. resides at 810 Guilford Street, two other sons, William C. and Frederick P., of Pittsburgh, died during the past year. There are 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. [Lebanon Daily News, Lebanon, Pa., Friday January 12, 1945]
