WOMAN IS KILLED BY TROLLEY CAR

Aged and Deaf, She Failed to See or Hear It.

Mrs Susan E Burks, a deaf mute, aged 60 years, was killed by a street car at East Point Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Her skull was crushed and her left leg was broken in two places below the thigh. She lived but eight minutes after the accident and never regained consciousness.

Mrs Burks was crossing the track at Washington Ave and Main St when killed. She waited for an express car to pass, and did not see, and of course could not hear the car that was following the express.

Mrs Nora Foster, Mrs Burks' daughter, was notified by telephone of the accident. She hurried to the scene, but when she saw her mother's lifeless and mangled body, she fainted and was taken to her home in a buggy.

The body of Mrs Burks was at first taken to the undertaker's but was afterward removed to the home of Mrs Foster.

The funeral will be held Thursday.

Mrs Burks is survived by four daughters, Mrs Nora Foster, Mrs Ida Estes, Miss Rosa Burks and Miss Nellie Burks.

Mrs Burks Crossed Tracks After Express Car Had Gone By, and an East Point Car, in the Rear, Bore Down Upon Her.

Mrs Susan E Burks, aged 60 years, a deaf-mute, was run down and almost instantly killed by an East Point trolley car yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, at the corner of Washington avenue and Main street in East Point.

Mrs Burks was returning to the home of her daughter, Mrs W H Foster, and paused at the crossing of the track to allow an express car to go by. The car which struck her down was coming in just behind the express car, and it is thought that Mrs Burks was not aware that another car was coming.

The motorman applied his brakes just as he saw Mrs Burks start forward, and brought the car to a sudden stop and rushed to her side with others. Mrs Burks was found lying on the ground, her skull was crushed in at the back of her head, deep cuts and bruises were about her forehead and her left leg was broken in two places below the thigh. She never regained consciousness, though she lived about eight minutes.

Daughter Fainted.
Mrs Foster, the daughter of the dead woman, was at once notified of the accident over the telephone. When she was told of her mother's accident, Mrs Foster dropped the receiver and rushed to the scene, several blocks from her residence. When she say her mother's lifeless and bloody form she swooned away, and it was necessary to carry her to her residence in a buggy.

Dr E P Overby, a physician at East Point, was one of the few eye-witnesses of the accident. He said: "It all happened so quickly that I hardly know anything about the manner in which she was struck. I only heard a rush and a dull thud, then say Mrs Burks lying on the ground. When I reached her the circulation had not then been affected She lived abut eight minutes but never regained conscious. The motorman blew his whistle as the car approached the crossing, but, of course, Mrs Burks was not able to hear."

Mrs Burks would have been sixty years of age on the 24th of December.

Mrs Burks is survived by her four daughters, Mrs Nora Foster, Mrs Ida Estes, Miss Rosa Burks and Miss Nellie Burks. Though both husband and wife were mutes, none of the children are similarly afflicted. Mrs Burks lived with her daughter, Mrs Nora Foster, at the corner of Washington avenue and Sims street in East Point.

The body was removed from the undertaker's establishment during the night to the residence of Mrs Foster, where the funeral will be held some time tomorrow.

FUNERAL OF MRS BURKS WAS HELD YESTERDAY
Axercises Were Impressive Owing to Her Affliction and Attendance of Fellow Deaf Mutes.

The funeral services of Mrs Susan Burks were held yesterday afternoon at the residence of her daughter, Mrs W H Foster, East Point. Rev W H Upshaw conducted the brief and simple ceremonies.

Mrs Burks was a deaf-mute, and for several years attended the Deaf-Mute Bible Class at St Mark's church. Her class attended in a body and the scripture readings and eulogy were translated to them by signs from the regular class teacher.

The interment will be at Cassville, Ga, today, the body, attended by her family, going on an early train this morning.

The occasion was unusually impressive, owing to the affliction of Mrs Burks and the tearful,, silent sympathy shown her people by the deaf-mute class in floral offering and attendance. The eloquent sign language was expressive to them, as the tears showed their depth of feeling for her family.
