Former School Head Dies

CARTHAGE, Mo. - J. L. Campbell, 78 years old, superintendent of Carthage schools 26 years prior to his retirement in 1955, died at 7:40 o'clock this morning at his home, 321 East Centennial avenue.

Mr. Campbell received his college education at Warrensburg State college and the University of Kansas. He was dean of the Jefferson City Junior college prior to coming to Carthage.

Mr. Campbell was born May 26, 1887 in Osceola and was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. Stephen B. Campbell. He was married August 20, 1912 in Gallatin to Miss Irma McQue, who died June 18, 1944. He was married July 21, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wis. to Mrs. Madge Bates, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Virgil Fieker of Rossmoor, Calif., a stepdaughter Mrs. E. Ross Martin of Lincoln, Neb., and two stepsons, Robert Bates of Liberty, and Bill Bates of Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Knell mortuary. The Rev. John M. Robertson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, and the Rev. J. Donald Kruithof of Miami, Okla., will officiate. Burial will be in Park cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary until noon Thursday, when the casket will be closed.
