Miss Dessie was a country school marm, and once taught at the one room Hebron School(destroyed by fire) that was located next to Hebron Cemetery. Her mother was a sister of the wife(Alice Hedger) of Dudley Moore. Reverend Moore was, at one time, the county school superintendent of Anderson County as well as the minister of Shawnee Run Baptist Church in Mercer County.
Miss Dessie cared for her ailing father, Charles Gillis, after the early death of her mother. She, subsequently, became the surrogate mother for her three nieces after their mother, Annie Thompson Gillis, was unable to fulfill parental responsibility. In addition, Miss Dessie cared for her invalid sister, Frances, until her death in 1953.
Miss Dessie spent the last few years of her life in a nursing home in Harrodsburg.
