Thad Rollison described his brother-in-law Nathaniel Jersey Johnson as "tall, slim, light complexioned with dark hair and a mustache. He was a carpenter and a farmer. If he wasn't busy at one thing, he was at another. He was handy at any kind of work and he was a successful farmer."

He was originally from Paintlick, VA but moved with his family to Tennessee as a boy. In 1860 he married his first wife Sarah and in 1861 he and his brother joined the Union Army; the 1st Tennessee Infantry, Co. C. They served until October 17, 1864 when they were discharged in Nashville.

After the Civil War, Nathaniel moved his wife Sarah and their children to Kentucky and then to Missouri where Sarah died in 1873 leaving Nathaniel with three children; nine year old John, eight year old Mary and two year old Katie.

Nathaniel eventually ended up in Arkansas County, Arkansas where he met Thad Rollison's sister Matilda "Ella." They were married on November 25, 1885. "The ceremony was performed by M. Holt of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South." Along with his young daughter, Katie, Nathaniel and Ella Johnson started their lives together in the "Thetford Place" at Arkanasas Post but soon moved to Sunset, Texas where N. J. Johnson died in 1893.
