He served in the Civil War, C.S.A., enlisted Oct. 16, 1861, Knoxville, TN, to serve in his brother's place, who had deserted, so as to keep his brother from going to prison or being killed. Pvt., Co. I 16th Alabama. Served until the Battle of Fishing Creek, KY, in 1862. Re-enlisted Mar. 1, 1862, LaGrange, AL., Orderly Sgt. from Feb. 1863, 35th Alabama Infantry. Served until they reached Augusta, GA., after Gen. Hood's rout in TN,there he was detailed to the 2nd Regiment Engineer Troops. His duty was to keep the pontoon wagons in repair.
