In the late 1940's and 50's James Edward Cox was told, by his parents, Ed and Myrtle Sensibaugh Cox, that his grandfather, John Monroe Cox and his siblings, William, James and Roxie, were orphans. At this time they did not know who the Cox family was that had taken them in to raise. It was when I began my research and Edley Wilbur Cox, Jr. began his research, that we found the family was John and Catharine Cox. They raised the four as their children. We still do not know whether Cinthia was a sister to William, James, John Monroe, and Roxie, or whether she was the daughter of John and Catharine. We can find no information about her except in the 1860 and 1870 United States Federal Census. She is listed with the family as being the first child and being 9 years old. That would make her being born in 1851 in 1860 so she would be their first child. You will notice that the following article does not mention Cinthia as being one of the four. We had been unable to find any information concerning this until February 4, 2010, when Jo Ann happened upon the family of William Cox in Ancestry.com. William had married Frances Elizabeth Sandridge in 1874. The story of how the family of four became the children of John and Catharine Cox according to William's family history follows below:
William Cox and Frances Elizabeth Sandridge Cox marries in 1874
Frances Elizabeth Sandridge was born in Franklin County, Tennessee on May 11, 1857. She was named after her grandmother, Frances Donaldson Sandridge and passed the story down through her family that she was cared for by a "Negro Mammie". She loved this Mammie very much. She was about 12 years old when her mother died and she then helped her father raise the other children. She traveled with her father by wagon from Tennessee through Arkansas into Missouri during the 1870's to settle around the community of Hutton Valley.
It was during this travel that she met William "Bill" Cox, born on November 30, 1852. Bill was an orphan and had the last name "Knowls". He had changed his name to Cox when someone by that name had taken him and his brothers, James and John Monroe and sister Roxie Catharine to raise. Bill and Frances Cox later moved to Oregon County settling on a farm near John Sandridge, her brother. There they remained until Bill died on April 16, 1918 and Frances died on August 27, 1941. They are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
