Dorothy M. Cooley, 91, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday evening at the Hospice Center in Columbus.

Born Aug. 10, 1916, in East Columbus, she was the daughter of Ben and Mary Rager. She was a graduate of Columbus Business College and prior to her marriage worked as a bookkeeper for Butler-Jones Candy Company.

On Sept. 4, 1937, she married the love of her life, Robert R. Cooley. Dorothy was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and was very proud of her Cradle Roll Certificate. She was active in Victory Sunday School Class, Fifty-Five Fellowship Club and Dorcas Circle.

She was a 50-year member of Columbus Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star. As such she served as Worthy Matron of the Columbus Chapter, President of District No. 4 and Grand Electa of the Indiana Grand Chapter. She also served as President of Columbus Assembly of Social Order of the Beauceant of Indiana and was a member of Columbus Exchangette Club.

"Mom Cooley" touched the lives of hundreds of teen-age girls while serving as Mother Advisor of Columbus Assembly of Order of Rainbow for Girls, Deputy of the Indiana Assembly and Secretary of the Indiana Girls Foundation.

Her legacy lives on through her daughters, Sue Sutton (Gordon) of Columbus and Patricia Riley (Von Stewart) of Bloomington; her son, Robert Richard Cooley of Columbus; her grandchildren, Tim, Mike and Chris Sutton, Peggy Feldmeyer, Pat, Mike and Paul Riley, Sean Cooley, Deidra Dunstan and Erin Sims; and her 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Upon her death she joined her beloved husband, Bob; her parents; her brothers, Arthur, Lawrence and Robert; her sisters, Lillian, Correan and Helen; and her precious granddaughter Casey.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street with the Rev. Michael T. Hogg officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday. Order of the Eastern Star services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will follow at City Cemetery in Columbus.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made through the funeral home to Missions Team at First Christian Church.

On the day she was born, the world rejoiced and she cried. On the day she died, the world cried and she rejoiced.
