Mary Magdalena Dunkelberger, Gass, Van Horn, was the daughter of Heinrich (Henry) Dunkelberger and Catherine Henninger Dunkelberger. According to records found in family records, and in "The Dunkelberger Family: Europe to America 1600-1982," written by Shirley J. Turner, Tucson Arizona. Henry and Catherine had two children, John Dunkelberger and Mary Magdalena Dunkelberger. Catherine most likely died after childbirth with Mary, or not long after. Heinrich (Henry) decided to move west to Indiana, and left John and Mary in the care of their maternal Grandparents, John and Maria Henninger.
Mary married her first husband, James Gass, on October 14, 1835, and they had five children, Benneville Gass, Elizabeth Gass, William H. Gass, John Gass, and Reuben Gass.
Mary married her second husband, James Van Horn, on August 19, 1856. They had three children: Franklin Pierce Van Horn, Nelson Dunkelberger Monroe Van Horn, and Mary Magdalene Van Horn.
Mary is buried in St. Peter's Reformed Cemetery, Paxinos, Northumberland County, PA.
