In August of 1861 Joseph Brown enlisted in the Fortieth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and through three years he served in many of the important engagements of the Civil War, being on the skirmish line at the siege of Vicksburg. Being mustered out in 1864, he returned to his farm labors.
