Ralston Oliver "R.O." Stemen, 100, of Bryan and formerly of Hillsdale, Mich., died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Hillside Country Living in Bryan.
Born Nov. 24, 1905, in Van Wert County, he was the son of Adeline (Galloway) and J.W. Stemen. He was first married to Florence Strine and she preceded him in death. He was married on Nov. 20, 1945, to Erma Strine and she preceded him in death July 23, 2004.
He was a resident of Hillsdale from 1946 to 1989, after he was a resident of Pioneer and Bryan. He was a farmer and livestock hauler all his life.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Carma Lou) Haumschild and Mrs. Floyd (Marcella) Schanke, both of Wisconsin, and Mrs. David (Janice) Bilton of Montpelier; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and 25 nieces and nephews. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kennis "Bud" Friess; three sisters, Mabelle Francis, Wanda Keating and Edith Waltz; and four brothers, Ernest, Harold, J. Raliah and Stanley Stemen.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. in the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home, Hillsdale. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Dr. August Peters to officiate. Interment will follow at the Wyllys Cemetery in Cambria Twp. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of the donor's choice. www.eaglefuneralhomes.com.
