The son of William and Anna (Slack) Denison originally from Stonington, CT.
Gurdon in the year 1810 settled in Salem township, Muskingum County, Ohio about a half mile east of the present site of Adamsville. He returned to Mansfield, Massachusetts and married Etherlinda Slack on 23 March 1812, a daughter of Abel Slack, who was also an early settler of Muskingum County. In 1822, he deeded 2 acres of his land to the Trustees of the Baptist Meeting House, for a consideration of $100.00. The site was used for the church building and cemetery. The church was dismantled in 1948 and the cemetery remains. Gurdon's wife Etherlinda died July 22, 1822 in the 33rd year of her age. She was the first person buried in this cemetery, and Gurdon's gravestone is on her left. Today the stone is barely legible. Gurdon was a Commisary offcer in the War of 1812, which began about two years after he located in the township. His four sons settled in Iowa. A daugter is buried with the mother. A few years after the death of Gurdon's wife, he sold his farm to Henry Wheeler and moved to Timber Run, in the western part of the county. In January 1823 he married Elizabeth Krusan who died in Springfield, Ohio in 1874.
