James McDonald was born in Ireland in the 1830s and emigrated to England sometime before 1858. The Great Famine (1845-1849) was a time of mass emigration of the Irish people. It is unknown whether James and his wife Mary Burns met and married in Ireland or England. James and his sons were coal miners. As was common for coal workers, the family moved about looking for better working and living conditions. The ten children of James and Mary were born at three different locales: St. Helens, Lancashire; Sheffield, Yorkshire; and Tanfield, County Durham. All but one child, Denis (1864 -1869) lived to adulthood.

The family split apart when James and Mary emigrated to the United States with the four youngest children. They arrived at Philadelphia, 15 May 1888, on the British Princess from Liverpool, England. Their second son, James Jr., and his wife Isabella Offord also immigrated to Pennsylvania.

James Sr. was living in Portage, Cambria Co., Pennsylvania in August 1892 when he granted permission for daughter Theresa to marry Edward Joseph Doyle in Wilmore, Pennsylvania. James "signed" the document with his "X."

The children who stayed behind in England were: John Patrick (1858-1927); Emily (1862-1897) wife of Peter Kelly; Mary (1865-1941) wife of Michael Hearn; and Sarah Spooner.

The death by pneumonia of James McDonald was recorded at Cambria County, Pennsylvania, 7 Dec 1895, almost seven months after his death in May. The entry in the registration book is written just beneath that of infant John McDonald. The two entries are out of chronological order but were noted on the same day which probably means a family member walked to the courthouse to register the two deaths.

The death date and burial location of wife Mary Burns is unknown. Any information about Mary Burns McDonald is welcomed.
