First served as captain of Company I in the 27th Maine Infantry Regiment from 30 Sept 1862 to 17 July 1863. On 3 Mar 1864, he was mustered in as captain of Co A, 32nd Maine Infantry. Due to a disability from contracting typho-malaria during the spring, he resigned on 5 Nov 1864.

The son of William M and Mary Eliza (Emery) Bryant. Seth was deputy collector and inspector of customs from 1865 to 1885 and was a town selectman for 22 (non-consecutive) years between 1857 and 1886 [History of Kennebunk, pg 511].

He and wife Mary Wormwood had three children:
Charles E, 9 Jan 1852 - 2 June 1923
Henry Davis, 13 May 1853 - 25 July 1860
Walter L, ca 1867 - 15 Nov 1889
