Orangeburg - Mrs. Lessie Gleaton Fanning, 87, of 755 Whitman St., Orangeburg, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at UniHealth Care Center in Orangeburg. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Double Branch Baptist Church in Orangeburg. The Rev. John O'Cain and the Rev. Lanier Singleton will officiate. Burial will be in Double Branch Baptist Church Cemetery in Orangeburg. Active pallbearers will be Carlisle Courtney, Ira McKuhen, Marion Britton, James Hiers, Hank Fanning and Bill Jones. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. before the service. Mrs. Fanning was born Oct. 9, 1921, in Orangeburg County; the daughter of the late Samuel Gleaton and the late Phenie Barr Gleaton. She was a member of Double Branch Baptist Church in Orangeburg and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Aiken. She was the widow of the late James Rostic Fanning Sr. and was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Patrick Fanning, and a grandson, Curt Fanning. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. James R. (Julia) Fanning Jr. of Sandy Run; a daughter-in-law, JoAnne Fanning of Virginia; two grandsons, Tim Fanning and Scott Fanning; two great-grandsons, Corey Fanning and Jonathan Fanning; and a number of nieces and nephews.
