HENRY B. LUCE

Mr. Luce was born December 10, 1835, in Long Island, New York, and died August 12, 1906, at the home of F.H. Shelton, three miles north of Galatia, Kansas.
His boyhood days were spent in his native state of Ohio. In January, 1860, he was married to Miss Earnestine A. Rogers, of Andrew county, Missouri. In September, 1862, he enlisted in Co. I, 13th Kansas Volunteer Infantry and served as commissary sergeant for his regiment. He was taken prisoner of war at the battle of Mark's Mills, Ark., and was taken to Camp Ford near Tyler, Texas, where he remained a prisoner for ten months. He was mustered out of service on May 22, 1865, and located in Nodaway county, Mo. In 1886 he moved to Russell county, Kansas, and four years later moved to Barton county, where he has since resided. He leaves one son, Charles, of Kansas City Mo., and two daughters in this neighborhood, Mrs. L.W. Brunson and Mrs. F.H. Shelton.
Mr. Luce and wife joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Pleasant H**, Mo., and was a faithful follower for thirty years. His was an exemplary life and his words of counsel were dear to his children. God grant that his life may prove a blessing to all who knew him.
On August 14th he was laid to rest beside his wife in Fairview cemetery at Galatia.
