Published in the Kearney Hub from 5/22/2010 - 5/24/2010Verna E. Swanson, 77 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center at Holdrege. Verna was born July 29, 1932 on the family farm north of Holdrege in Phelps County, Nebraska, the youngest of three daughters of Albert and Maggie (Black) Turner.

She began her education at Holdrege, until the family moved to Bertrand, Nebraska, where she continued her education. Following her education, she was employed at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington and later was an X-Ray Technician at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege.

On June 17, 1951 she was united in marriage to Donald L. Swanson and to this union two sons were born: Stuart and Mark. While her husband, Don was serving in the United States Army, the couple resided Alexandria, Virginia, where Verna worked on post at Fort Belvoir, until Don's honorable discharge. The couple then returned home to Nebraska in 1954 and moved to Furnas County, near Cambridge. During this part of Verna's life she focused on raising her two sons and caring for their home. In 1957, the family returned to Phelps County, and resided north of Loomis for a couple of years before they engaged in farming at Atlanta, Nebraska in 1959. Later in years they moved to Holdrege, where Verna was employed by the Holdrege Police Department as a Dispatcher until her retirement on October 20, 1992. Verna was talented with her handy work, knitting sweaters for the boys when they were young and she also enjoyed ceramics. She owned and operated a ceramic shop called, Verna's Ceramics and treasured the friendships made through the years in business. She had a special place in her heart for the Opportunity Center, teaching many students the art of ceramics. She will always be remembered for her love of animals.

Verna was the member and past President of the CB Club in Holdrege and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Sigfred and Alma Swanson; brothers-in-law: Howard Swanson and his wife, Flo, Warren Swanson, Rod Swanson, Everett Hodge, and LaVern Ernst.
