Verna was born July 29, 1932 on the family farm north of Holdrege in Phelps County, Nebraska, the youngest of three daughters of Albert and Maggie (Black) Turner.
She began her education at Holdrege, until the family moved to Bertrand, Nebraska, where she continued her education. Following her education, she was employed at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington and later was an X-Ray Technician at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege.
