Major Walseth served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years until he retired in 1963 as a major. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served as a navigator and weather officer. He was shot down in Korea and received a Purple Heart. He also received the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
Major Walseth attended South Dakota State College from 1939 until 1942.
He was a member of the 13th Bomb Squadron Association, Military Officers Association of America, and the American Legion.
Major Walseth is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathryn; two daughters, Randi of Riverside and Kristi of Washington D.C.; and a sister, Jean of South Dakota.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston and Simons Mortuary in Riverside. Friends may call at the mortuary Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery.
NOTE: John was named after his father as a junior. Yet there is some discussion about his correct middle name. It is Einerson like his father, or the shortened Einer he used in the military? Future work will be done to resolve this.
