William C. Coffey was the son of McCaleb Coffey and Elizabeth Collette Coffey.

In 1862 he joined the 26th North Carolina Infantry and later transferred to the 58th N. C. regiment. He served until the end of the Civil War and was present at the surrender of Gen. Johnston's army at Greensboro in April of 1865.

After the war he was a merchant by trade in Boone and in Zionville. He and his brother Thomas Jefferson Coffey built the Coffey Hotel in 1869 in Boone. He married Carrie L. Curtis and after Carrie's death he married Mrs. Ada Penn.
