She received her nursing degree from Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City in 1949. From there she joined the U.S. Navy and became an Ensign in the Nurse Corps. Afterwards, she married and began raising a family.
She is survived by her first husband, Wilho Isak Tommila and their three children, Jan A. Tommila of Germantown, MD; Taina T. Schweitzer, of Mt. Airy, MD; and Erik W. Tommila, of Wheaton, MD. She is also survived by her second husband, Edward Lewis Scheiderer and her sister Frances L. (Skinner) Hopkins, of Lancaster, PA and left three grandsons, Davin Lee Bell of Baltimore, MD; Scott F. Schweitzer and Tyler H. Schweitzer of Mount Airy, MD.
As was her spirit and nature she was a very independent soul choosing to retain her birth name of Skinner. The family also respected her wishes that there would be no memorial service. She was cremated and her ashes returned to the land of her youth, Bear Mountain State Park in New York, where she had been employed as a young woman.
Obituary written in 2006 by her daughter, Jan Tommila.
