David R. Aylesworth was born in New Mexico territory near Tucumcari Sept. 10, 1907. He was the oldest son of eight boys and two girls of D. C. and Addy who moved to Plainview. Imogene Smith was born near Mangum, Oklahoma Sept. 20, 1908 and was the oldest daughter of W. W. and Pearl Smith who moved to the YL Community in 1935.
Dave and Gene were married in Amarillo Oct. 12, 1929. They moved to Muleshoe in June 1942 with their four children: Rufus (Dec. 25, 1930) Bill (May 11, 1933) Amrina (June 26, 1935) and John (Jan. 12, 1940). They moved to their farm about three miles NW of town, where Dave built a house for them to live in and farmed. On April 17, 1943 Beatrice was born in the new Muleshoe Clinic. She cried all the time she and Gene were in the hospital. When they got ready to go home, Dr. L. T. Green told Gene to take her home and make a pan of gravy, the only thing wrong he said, she was hungry. They did and fed her chicken gravy when she was three days old. She then quit crying and slept. After that she was fed from the table and was a normal baby. This was before the grocery stores had very much baby food.
Dave sold the farm and bought ten acres down near Highway 84 and moved there in January 1944. Here he added on to the house and made a comfortable, modern farm home. This ten acres is now Aylesworth Acres. Smitty came along on Dec. 4, 1944 in the Muleshoe Clinic. This finished Dave and Gene's family and all of them went on to graduate from Muleshoe High except Amrina. She got married during her senior year and moved away. All four boys served their time in the service of their country.
In 1945 Dave began working with R. L. Brown in the real estate business. By 1950 he and R. L., assisted by some men from Lubbock, bought the Muleshoe Ranch and developed it into farm land. By 1953 Dave had his own real estate business and eventually moved a large two-story build to 19th and American Blvd. where he had his office until after Gene's death Jan. 29, 1960.
Dave and Gene were charter members of the the First Christian Church and remained very active in the church until their deaths. They helped get the church started and helped the building near the hospital. They were both in the IOOF and Rebecca lodges, plus all school activities that took place.
A year or two after Gene's death Dave moved to Lubbock then Plainview where he died March 29, 1982. He always considered Muleshoe home. Dave and Gene are buried beside each other in the Bailey County Memorial Park (now Muleshoe Memorial Park Cemetery). Story by Rufus Aylesworth
