Jane Hitchcock, 94, passed away in the Health Pavilion at Meadowood in Bloomington on May 19, 2010.

Jane was born April 4, 1916, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Russell and Florence Terry. Jane's father was a conductor for the Monon Railroad, retiring in 1963 after 50 years of service.

Jane attended schools in Bloomington (where she was known as Mary Jane Terry) as well as Indiana University. When Jane's husband, Fred G. Hitchcock, died in 1971, Jane took over the operation of Peoples Insurance and Realty Company Inc. and successfully operated that business, with the help of Charles H. Beard, her friend and business partner, until the sale of the business in 1997. Jane was a dynamic, decisive and strong-willed business person, succeeding in an industry which was at that time dominated by men.

Jane had no children and is survived by her sister, Marie Alexander, who resides in Bloomington, and by her sister's daughter, Sharon Alexander Green, who resides in Carpinteria, California, with her husband, Jack Leslie Green. Jane's husband, Fred, was one of nine children, and Jane is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the Hitchcock family, one of whom is Linda Hitchcock of Auburn, Indiana. Jane is also survived by Deborah Beard Huffer, daughter of Charles H. Beard, Jane's deceased business partner.

Jane was an active member of the Bloomington community and gave selflessly of her time and energy as a member of many organizations. Jane was a longtime member of the First United Church of Bloomington, serving as its treasurer for 20 years. Jane was appointed by the Monroe County Commissioners to the Board of the Bloomington Hospital, and she also served as a member of the Bloomington Hospital Foundation. Jane was one of the early female members of the Bloomington Rotary, where she usually sat at the same table with the same group for each meeting. Jane was a member of the Board of Directors of the Windermere East Condominium Owners Association, where she served as president. Jane laughed, along with everyone else, when Weddle Brothers Construction placed a nicely designed and well-painted sign (saying "Jane Hitchcock Grand Canyon") near the huge ditch created during the construction of improvements to College Mall Road at its intersection with Covenanter Drive after Jane, on behalf of the Windermere Homeowners, had, in not a timid fashion, complained about the problems created by the construction project. Jane was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bloomington National Bank, and she belonged to Kappa Kappa Sigma Sorority as well as Altrusa International Inc. (an international organization of professionals dedicated to community service). Jane was a member of the I.U. Varsity Club as well as the I.U. Alumni Association and enthusiastically gave her support to Indiana University. Whether or not the home football game had a pleasant result, the post-game parties hosted by Jane were always a hit. Bloomington and Monroe County were indeed fortunate to have such a caring, energetic and concerned citizen as a lifelong resident of our community.

Jane would want to thank all of those who assisted her during the last few weeks of her life, including the Bloomington Hospital, the nurses and other health care professionals in the Health Pavilion at Meadowood, and Home Instead, who assisted Jane with around-the-clock attention. Finally, Jane would want to acknowledge the longtime friendship with, and assistance by, Darlene Bell, who worked with Jane at Peoples Insurance and Realty Company Inc.

There will be a memorial service officiated by the Reverend Jack Skiles at the First United Church, 2420 East Third Street, Bloomington, Indiana, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be at Valhalla Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in memory of Jane to the First United Church of Bloomington or to the Bloomington Hospital Foundation.

Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
