Robert A. "R.A." Wells


Robert A. "R.A." Wells, born on Sept. 10, 1921, in Winona, Smith County, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in Humble.

He was the fifth child of Alfred Byron and Dessie P. Wells and was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bruce of Winona and Melrose of Tyler; and sisters, Evalene Bass of Tyler, Ruth Louise Jones of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mildred Floyd of Tyler.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Orris Hays Wells of Humble; son, R. Mark Wells and wife Patricia of Ocean Springs, Miss.; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and sister, Mary Jane Dale of Fort Worth.

R.A. graduated from Winona High School, Tyler Commercial College and attended The University of Texas in Austin.

He was a Navy combat veteran of World War II and made the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa aboard USS LCS (L) # 31. He also served one year on the Battleship Tennessee.

He retired from Texaco Inc. in 1983 after 35 years as a certified professional landman, and served two years for Sinclair Oil for a total of 37 years in the oil business.

He was a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 50 years in Tyler, Jackson, Miss., Metairie, La., and Shreveport, La. At the time of his passing, he was a member of the Atascocita United Methodist Church in Humble.

He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and El Karubah Shriner, a member of the American Legion Post 42 in Ocean Springs, Miss. He was also a past member of the East Texas Oil Scouts and Landmen's Association in Tyler, and the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, Tyler, Jackson, Miss., New Orleans, La., and Shreveport, La.

He was a current member of the American Association of the USS LCS (L) 1-130, serving in the Color Guard for more than five years.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at Lloyd James Funeral Home, 1011 E. First St. in Tyler.

The following day, all are invited to gather with the family, during a graveside service and interment, to be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, at the Starrville Cemetery in Smith County, under direction of Lloyd James Funeral Home, Tyler.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in memory of R.A. Wells may be directed to a charity of one's choice.
