William was the oldest child of William Norton and Henrietta Mary Ellen Tharp Young. He came to Texas as a child with his parents, about 1881, and the family settled near Rockdale in Milam County. He married Sophia Kamman, daughter of William Henry Morris Kamman and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzy" Wilson Kamman, on May 6, 1894. Sophia died Feb 23, 1907 in Milam County.

After Sophia's death William married Eugenia McPhaul, daughter of Campbell McPhaul and Nancy Jane Clark McPhaul, at Moody, Bell, Texas in 1907. "The first year they were in Bell County, they farmed what is now the Jesse Ellis Hunt place. In 1921 they bought the Maxdale store from Greene Hunt
and operated the store until 1926. During this time William's son, Wallace Young, was named postmaster and the post office was in the store. They then purchased a farm in Lampasas County and lived there until William's death".

William and Eugenia had one child, James Ferguson Young.

William died in 1941 at the age of 69.
