ANGIER -- Claybourne Smith Adams, 78, a retired farmer, of 644 Mangum Road, died Tuesday at the Veterans Hospital in Durham.

He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Adams and a mem- ber of the Angier Baptist Church were he had served as a Deacon. A US Army veteran during World War II he served from 1943-1945 during which time he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and member of the RTA Pigeon Club.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Angier Baptist Church by Rev. Grover K. Blackburn Jr. and Rev. Wayne Oakes. Burial, Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

Surviving: his wife of 10 years, Ann Mangum Adams; daughters, Betty Jo Spivey and her husband, Larry Spivey of Angier and Ginger Jennette and her husband, Walt Jennette of Stokes; step-daughter, Gayle Adams and her husband, Steve Adams of Angier; stepsons, Joe V. Mangum of Chocowinity, Tony Mangum and his wife, Edna Mangum of Coats, and Doug Man- gum and Cynthia of Angier; sister, Peggie A. Averette and her husband, Donald Averette of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Jill Spivey of Angier, Jon Spivey of Raleigh and Caroline Cole of Greenville; nine step-grand- children and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Pate Adams; a sister, Katherine A. Wilson; brothers, J. Clyde Adams, Hayden Adams and Wayron "Pete" Adams; a step-son, Bobby R. Mangum.

The family will be at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier, 7-9 p.m. today.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Angier Baptist Church, P.O. Box 130, Angier, NC 27501.
