A scan copy of Norman Bater's military dental chart indicates his birth date as October 2, 1926. The squadron War diary show the date of casualty (his death) as June 24, 1945. He was a crewman aboard a US Navy PB4Y-2 'Privateer' patrol bomber - crew #3 of squadron VPB-119. While on a mission he manned the aft upper deck machine gun turret (dual 50 caliber).

He was a member of crew #3 of squadron VPB-119 when his plane crashed during a rescue operation on the Luichow Peninsula, China on 24 June 1945.
