Beatrice Austin Hanson, 94, of Brooks, Maine, formerly of Montclair, died on Tuesday, July 15.
Mrs. Hanson was born in Brooks, Maine.She received her B.E. and M.A. degrees from the University of Maine, and did graduate work on the doctoral level at the University of North Carolina and at Yale University.While at the University of Maine, Mrs. Hanson and her late husband collaborated on two full-length musical comedies, which were produced at the university theater, one of which won ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) National Award.
Mrs. Hanson and her husband were for some years until their retirement, members of the English Department faculty at Montclair State College.After retirement she continued teaching at the Montclair Adult School.Writing was a continuing interest for Mrs. Hanson, and at one point she had a play optioned for Broadway, and became a longtime member of the Dramatists' Guild.She received a number of local and state awards for several one-act plays of hers, in which she acted and directed, and were presented at women's clubs in the area.After retirement the Hansons performed for women's clubs and other organizations in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Penn-sylvania.They also traveled abroad extensively.
Mrs. Hanson was a member of the Brooks Congregational Church and also for many years, a member of the Woman's Club of Upper Montclair, where she served on the Board of Directors, and was a longtime member of the Cosmopolitan Club, also serving on its Board of Directors.She was an active member of the retired faculty group of Montclair State College and of the Passaic Children's Day Nursery Aides.She was the recipient of the Boston Post Cain.
Mrs. Hanson was predeceased by her husband, Frank B. Hanson; a daughter, Carol Borland; and a brother, Thaddeus W. Austin.
