He was born in 1865 at Grinnell, Iowa.
His first wife was Lydia E. Ebersole (1870-1897) who had 6 children with him before she died. Oliver Wendell,Basalt, Calif. (1888-1972,) Addison Bruce (1890-,) Anna M.(1892-,) Merle (1894-,) Iva L.Steven, Lake Benton, Minn. (1895-,) and Rae O. Ukiah, Calif (1897-1971.)
In 1902, he married Leaffie Fannie Dunaway at Custer, South Dakota and in addition to raising his first wife's children she had 6 children with Wm Jos. William Joseph (1904-1977,) Thomas Val (1905-1989,) Sybyl Marie (1907-2005,)Infant (1909-1909,) Zena Mary (1910-1994,) and Florence Leaffie (1913-1988.)
William Joseph was retired from the service of the CB & Q railroad in 1935, after 43 years of continuous service.
He was a member of the Merna board of Trustees, being chairman of the board in 1934-1935.
Surviving, besides his wife, are children: Val, Lead, South Dakota, Mrs. Sibyl Yerk, Merna, Neb., Mrs Sena Eberhart, Grand Island, and Mrs. Florence Barry, Detroit, Mich; One brother Frank, Blue Hill; One sister, Alice Scott, Santa Ana, Calif; and 16 grandchildren.
Pallbears were: John Russon, James Danolt, Moses Stroud, Leslie Lomax, Arthur Sterner and Alna Patten. Music was by the quartet of Glen Reinertsa, Naomie Thomas, Elsie Mitchel and Paul Jackson with Mrs Richard Beals as pianist.
Funeral was under the direction of J. B. Stockham, Broken Bow.
