Amiel was the son of Frederick A. and Wilhelmine "Minnie" Scheske. He was born outside Berlin in a town called Posen. He was too young to serve during the Civil War, so he carried mail on horseback and drove horses for the Confederate Army.

He married Jesse E. Smead on October 29, 1878. They had the following known children:
