Named as the grandson of Johannes Hoffman in his grandfather's will, dated Dec. 7th, 1889. Johannes Hoffman bequeathed Harvey his "mansion" farm, situated in Wayne Twp., Dauphin county, PA, containing 175 acres, with a value of $9,000.00. At the time of his grandfather's death Harvey was about 15 years of age. The parcel also contained 61 acres of woodland, valued at $920.00, which was instructed to be sold when Harvey came of age. The proceeds of the sale would be split evenly between Sarah Ellen and Carma Ada Sheetz, granddaughters of the deceased, and first cousins to Harvey.

"Pennsylvania, County Marriages, 1885-1950" record the marriage of Harvey and Sara Jane Travitz on Feb. 19, 1893, noting Emma C. Hawk as Harvey's mother, and James Travitz as Sara's father. (After Emma's first husband Johnathan Hoffman died, she married Leonard Hawk.)

The 1910 and 1930 US PA census found the couple residing in East Pennsboro, Cumberland County, PA, with their sons Harry W. Hoffman, born about 1899, and Lawrence A. Hoffman, born about 1904.
