Mary Susan was the daugther of two sets of Oregon Pioneer families of the Linn and Marion County, Oregon areas. Her mother was a SHELTON. The main family came to Oregon in 1847 on the James Curl Wagon Train where many settled in the Scio, Oregon area. She and her parents--William and Evaline Jones Shelton and her sister, Drucilla Shelton Phillips, came to Oregon 6 years later on September 26, 1853 to Scio and settled on a DLC #4452 in the Jordan area outside of Scio. Her father, James Isaiah Crabtree's family came to Oregon the same year from Missouri and arrived in Oregon on 9/18/1853. His parents were: George "Washington" Crabtree and Susannah "Susan" Beny Crabtree.

The Crabtrees eventually moved from Linn County, Oregon to Stayton, in Marion County Oregon where she was raised. Her mother, Martha Ann Shelton, died at the age of 27 when Mary Susan Crabtree Townsend was only 2 years old . Her father remarried in 1878 to Selecta Jane Gardner, who helped raise her.

She married her husband Edward Luke Townsend of Marion County, Oregon in 1901/2 in Salem, Oregon. Later they had a son, Carl Edward Townsend in 1905 and he died in 1906. They lived in Salem, Oregon and are buried at City View Cemetery.
