NELL KATHERINE OREM HUGHES --- Nell was the third child of Evie M. Orem and "Gib" Hughes, born on June 21, 1907, the longest day in the year. She was a petite blonde with eye problems that were to follow her all her life. She spent her teens in the midst of the "flapper" era, but basically was timid. She and her sister, Pearl, attended Highland Park schools, and one of their favorite pastimes was shopping at Titche-Goettinger Department Store on Elm Street.

Saturday night was movie night. Gib would tuck all the family into the family Cadillac and take them to either the Majestic or the Palace Theater for the movies. Occasionally, there were parties in their home on University Boulevard, where the living room was forty feet long. One end was reserved for the piano and a hired orchestra to provide the music; the remainder of the living room, the spacious entry hall, and a veranda that stretched across the front of the house provided room for dancing and refreshments were provided in the dining room. Then in 1928 Gib had gall bladder surgery from which he never fully recovered. In August of that year he passed away and life changed drastically for the family. A few months later the stock market crashed and the "Great Depression" set in.

On July 26, 1929, Nell married Leo David Abbe in the First Presbyterian Church. He worked for the Texaco Company. Her mother, Evie M. Hughes, was a true matriarch, who liked to keep her family close by; so the young couple lived in the home place for the first few years. A son, Leo David, Jr., was born January 23, 1934, and a daughter, Peggy Nell, joined the family on September 20, 1936.

Nell and her family moved into a new home at 6028 Lewis Street in April 1939. It was located on part of the Samuel Orem farm in East Dallas. Her parents were living in a house on that same spot when their youngest son, Herbert (my husband), was born.

Nell Hughes Abbe passed away at her home on Lewis Street on January 16, 1985. Her husband followed on May 12, 1989, and both are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery.
