Born in New York City, he graduated from New York University with a degree in accounting in 1935. He became a CPA in New York in 1939 and worked at Haskin & Sells, now Deloitte & Touche.
A Lt. Commander with the US Navy in World War II, Mr. Rathgeber came to New Britain in 1952 to work at American Hardware Company and was influential in its growth to Emhart Corporation, where he served as Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, and Director until his retirement in 1978. He later served as Chariman of the CCSU Foundation, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Maurice Church, Shuttle Meadow Country Club, the American Legion Post in New Britain, and was active in numerous other local charitable organizations. He was a former director of several companies including Connecticut Natural Gas, New Britain General Hospital, and the former New Britain Bank & Trust Company.
Surviving is a son, John Rathgeber and his wife Susan of Kensington; two daughters and their spouses, Sue and John Kowalsky of Berlin, Carol and Stephen Kelly of Southington; six grandchildren, Mary-Catherine Heim of Simpsonville, SC, Stephen Kelly of Southington, Adam Kowalsky of Berlin, Brad, Reed, and Geoff Rathgeber, all of Kensington; and a nephew. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Rathgeber.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 8:00 a.m. at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m. in St. Maurice Church.
Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Carlson Funeral Home.
