Emory's father, Henry Hilton Wood, was in the 121st New York Volunteers. Col. Emory Upton was in charge of the regiment. He was a graduate of West Point and of the regular army prior to the Civil War.
He was a very strict colonel and the regiment eventually became know as "Upton's Regulars, due to the fact he ran the regiment with lots of drilling and things that he knew best. His regiment came to admire him, as he made them a top notch regiment in the Union forces.
Emory Upton Wood was named thus by his father in honor of Col. Upton, who later went on to become a general.
