Hilmer Grey Garner, 86, of Wytheville, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2004, in the Wythe County Community Hospital, Wytheville.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 18, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville, with the Rev. Robert "Bob" Billingsley officiating.
Entombment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Rural Retreat.
American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.
He was born Oct. 18, 1917, in Chase City. He was retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and the U.S. Army with 22 1/2 years of service where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 9 and V.F.W. Post No. 2719.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Hancock Garner, and his parents, Carroll and Avis Wagstaf Garner.
Survivors include three daughters, Sheron Nester of Dublin, Carolyn Garner of Florida, and Barbara Owens of Virginia Beach; five sons, Fred Gilbert of Wytheville, Grey Garner of Crystal, Minn., Larry Garner of Minnesota, Doug Gilbert of Wytheville, and Samuel Gilbert of Blackstone; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.
Those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Humane Society.
