STATESBORO - Mrs. Clyde Akins Cannon, age 100, died Saturday at her residence following a brief illness. The native and life-long resident of Bulloch County was born October 19, 1906 to Amos and Maggie Akins and was the fourth of 10 children. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and neighbor. She was a charter member of the Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was a charter member of the Middleground Homelakers Club and a devoted member of the Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She was a homemaker known in the community for her cooking, especially her apple tarts and fried chicken and was always willing to help and take care of others. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jesse Lewis "Pete" Cannon, a grandson, Michael Murphy and her nine siblings.
She is survived by: two children, Myrtis Cannon Murphy of Springfield of Springfield, Va., and Richard Lewis Cannon of Statesboro; four grandchildren and their spouses, Mona Murphy and Jan Pearson of Blackburg, Va., Barbara and Bill Miller of Burnsville, N.C., Gary Murphy and Laurie Speed of Houston, Texas, and Leah (Cannon) and Jimmy Barron of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; two great grandchildren, Garrett Murphy and Hunter Barron, many nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Jack Anderson officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Upper Mill Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 1529 Metts Road, Statesboro, GA 30461.
