She was born Aug. 1, 1923, in Cairo, the daughter of George and Doxie Henderson Archie. She married Lloyd D. Adams; he preceded her in death in 1998.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Louise Archie and Ora Lee Thompson.
She is survived by sons, Steven Archie of Lawndale, Calif., Ronnie McDougal of Flint, Mich., Reno McDougal of Atlanta, Ga., Romel McDougal of Detroit, Roy Whittner of Springfield (companion, Alice Fae Walton), Robert Banks (Virgie) of Springfield, David and Clifford Wheatly, both of Springfield, and Doug Terry of Detroit; daughters, Jerwonia Fitzgerald (companion, Marvin Robinson) of Springfield, Linda Terry and Mary Blanch Trice, both of Pontiac, Mich.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Archie (Debbie) and the Rev. Robert Medley (Alice), both of Springfield; a sister, Mattie Allen of Hesperia, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Rita was a resident of Springfield for 50 years. She was employed as a custodian for the District 186 School Board. She was a member of Union Baptist Church: Gaysson 10.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of funeral services at noon on Monday, May 17, 2010, at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. T. Ray McJunkins officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
