Wesley R. Calhoun Called; Respected Elderly Citizen Succumbs to Heart Trouble
At 11:20 o'clock Friday night death claimed W.R. Calhoun of this city, who had been ill with heart trouble for a week. His illness was critical from the very first & he made only slight & brief rallies during the days that intervened between its beginning & end. The many friends made daily inquiry as to his condition & much regret was expressed when the report proved unfavorable.
The funeral was conducted on Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which deceased was a member, by the pastor, Rev. W.R. Leslie. The attendance was quite large & sympathy & sorrow were manifested on every countenance. Mrs. E.H. Redeman of Marinette, Wis., & Mrs. A.G. Albright sang the hymns; the pallbearers were I.R. Little of Normal, W.H. Firke of Mansfield, G.B. Shere (sp?), O.L. Hurley, Frank Hender & W.E. Reid.
William Raper Calhoun, SON OF JOHN & HANNAH CALHOUN was BORN AT DAYTON, OHIO, 8/20/1850, died at his home in Farmer City, Illinois 1/23/1920, aged 69 yrs., 5 mos., 3 days. When he was six years old his family came to Illinois driving the entire distance & located at Decatur, where they settled on a farm which is now the MACON COUNTY FARM. After the Civil War, in which 4 older brothers & 2 half-brothers of deceased served in the Union Army, the family moved to Bloomington (to the reader; part of the family moved to Bloomington; the parents remained in Decatur, Il.) & at the age of 21, Mr. Calhoun took up farming on his own account near Weedman. After a few changes to other locations, he returned to the first farm & there remained until he retired & moved to this city 8 years ago. By industry & good management he acquired a fine body of land near Weedman which is now occuped by his sons.
In 1879 he married Miss Mary McClure who survives him together with the following sons & daughters; Mrs. Hatch Flint of Bellflower, Mrs. Alfred Smith of this vicinity, Leslie & Glenn.
Mr. Calhoun was a jovial disposition & apparently was enjoying good health & the pleasures of retired life.
His unexpected sickness, followed so swiftly by death, casts a shadow of sorrow over his intimates & friends in the community.
Relatives & friends in attendance at the funeral on Sunday afternoon included Tom & Frank Strimple, Mr. & Mrs. J.M. Birckelbaw, Dean & Harold Birckelbaw, Mrs. Helen Calhoun (wife of John C. Calhoun of Bloomington, Il.), & Mr. & Mrs. John Frisch & son of Bloomington, Miss Amy Claggett of Atlanta (to the reader: Amy was the gr. granddaughter of Hannah (Mock) (Gaff) Calhoun by Hannah's lst marriage), Mr. Bergland of Glava, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Williams, Mrs. Mae McIntyre, Hunter Kumler & H.
