1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty and mustered into state service in Cumberland County September 11, 1862, as a private with Co. G, 1st Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company September 23, 1862, an experience as uneventful as it was brief.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, June 15, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 23 as a private with Co. D in the six-month organization of the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (181st Pennsylvania), and promoted to corporal October 11, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company January 6, 1864.
3. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Mechanicsburg August 8, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 23 as 1st sergeant of Co. E, 200th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.
