Clell was first married to Stella Belle Beardon and had Theodore McClellan Farmer. Then, he married Thelma Taylor Scott and had Linda Jo, Daniel McClellan, and Mack Ira Farmer.

He committed suicide; his suicide note said that he did so do to failing health.

Clell's step-son, Dale Stansberry, bought him a headstone, but mis-spelled his middle name and got his birthday wrong.
