Michael Ahern worked on one of the New York bridges after he immigrated to America. He was a "groundhog worker." He worked on the footings or pilings of the bridge and made $5.00 a day, which was fair wages at that time. His son, John, was a pipefitter and worked for the union. (Story provided by George Edward Ahrens, grandson).

They later moved to St. Louis, MO and remained there the rest of their lives.

Michael and Julia permanently separated in about 1897-1898, but did not divorce; this occurred while they still had five children at home. Julia left Michael but they did not divorce. Nellie was married. Hanora "Nonie" lived in a boarding house and worked for her room and board. The other children were split up. Mary and John went to orphanages. William lived with someone else.

Michael's funeral was at St. Anthony's church in St. Louis, so this is mostly likely the church he belonged to.

Michael died of tuberculosis.

Children were: Hanora "Nonie", Nellie, William, John M., and Mary A.
