On November 17, 1855 Miss Mary A. Chittenden was married to Thomas Jefferson Martin. Mary was a descendant from one of the oldest families in Vermont. Her great-grandfather, Thomas Chittenden, was the first Governor of that State, and her grandfather, Martin Chittenden, was elected Governor in 1813, and served several terms. Truman Chittenden, father of Mrs. Mary Martin, was the eldest son of Governor Martin Chittenden.
After they were married, Thomas and Mary lived in Newton, Illinois. There were six children born to this union - Elizabeth, William C, Mary A., Thomas Jefferson "Jeffie", Lizzie and Edward Truman.
Mary passed away on March 1, 1903.
