DEATH OF MR. ANDREWS
An Old And Useful Rutherford Citizen Passes Away
On Saturday last Mr. James M. Andrews, of Cane creek, Rutherford county, died
rather suddenly. In the last year of so he had suffered from several slight
strokes of paralysis. Indeed, it is said, that he complained of a slight stroke
last week, but no immediate danger was apprehended. After eating supper,
however, Mr. Andrews was taken with a strangling spell, and died before his son,
R. Mal Andrews, could reach him.
Mr. Andres was about 85 years of age, He was buried in Old Brittain church yard
- the funeral sermon being preached by Rev. Mr. Cook, pastor of the church,
assisted by Rev. Mr. Hall, the new principal of the Westminster School - Mr.
Andrews having been an honored member of that church for many years.
Mr. Andrews married the daughter of the late Mr. Lindsey Melton, by whom there
were born to them eight children - four sons and four daughters, Mr. B. F.
Andrews, Dr. Mal Andrews, Mrs. Joe Long and Miss Clara Andrews. Dr. Andrews and
wife made their home with the aged father.
Mr. Andrews was one of the '49 ers, and went California by the Isthmus route in
search of gold. He was gone seven years, and returned to marry the lady of his
choice to whom he was engaged when he went away. He must have prospered there.
Nobody knows how many slugs he brought back with him; but he married soon after
his return and purchased and paid for a $10,000 plantation.
In all his years he was a king neighbor, a staunch friend, a good and useful
citizen. No family stands higher.
