James was a Civil War veteran enlisting 27 September 1864 at Kirklin, Clinton County, IN. He was a private in Company D for the duration of his enlistment. He was mustered out 15 August 1865 at Camp Stanley, Texas. During the time of his enlistment, the 30th reorganized Regiment were in the following engagements:
Operations against Hood in North Georgia and North Alabama September 20-November 3. Consolidated to a battalion of 7 companies October 3. Nashville Campaign November-December. Columbia, Duck River, November 24-27. Battle of Franklin November 30. Battle of Nashville December 15-16. Pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River December 17-28. Moved to Huntsville, Ala., and duty there till March, 1865. Operations in East Tennessee March 15-April 22. Duty at Nashville till June. Moved to New Orleans, La., June 16, thence to Texas July, and duty at various points till November. Mustered out November 25, 1865.
According to his Army records, he was 5' 6" tall, dark complexed, dark eyes, and black hair. Mother said that he always kept his hair dyed dark black right up until the time of his death and that he was always careful about his physical appearance. He was a pensioner much of his adult life upgrading his status as various Acts were passed by Congress. He suffered from lung disease, rheumatism, partial deafness, and heart trouble. Mother also stated that the only physical impairment that she was aware of was a damaged finger suffered during the Civil War which apparently never healed properly. He was born in Decatur County, IN but lived most of his adult life in Clinton County, IN near Hillisburg. He notes in his pension papers that he spent 11 months in North Dakota in 1904 (with his son Byron Randolph) and 18 months in Texas in 1899 - 1900. His military records also show he had two bouts with measles in December 1864 and convalesced from March 31, 1865 to April 20, 1865 for reasons not given in the papers. At the time of his death, his monthly pension was $67.50.
In the 1850 census, James is shown as living in Sugar Creek Twp, Clinton Co, IN as a 9 year at home with his parents, James and Anna, and that he was born in IN (page 810, #2/2).
In 1870 Clinton Co, Census James, Francis and his 4 sons living in Sugar Creek Twp.
Have not found James in 1880 or 1900 censuses. May have been recorded in Texas in 1900.

Referring to your letter of December 4...James Snodgrass...you are
advised that the schedules for Sugar Creek Township, Clinton Co., IN, as
returned for the year 1860 have been examined and our report sent you under
date Feb. 6 1911 has been verified, and found to be correct as given of
record. An examination has also been made for Sugar Creek township, Clinton
Co., IN, for the year 1850, and below is given statement showing returns of
the family of James and Ann Snodgrass with which is recorded James Snodgrass.
By a comparison between the returns of this family for 1850 and 1860, it would
appear that James Snodgrass should have been returned for the year 1860
between his brother Joseph and his sister Jemima, and not as the youngest
child of the family. This would agree with his statement to you as to his
age:

Rebecca J. Snodgrass

James Snodgrass complains of Rebecca J. Snodgrass his wife and says that he is and has been a resident of the State of Indiana for five years last past. That he is a bonified resident of the County of Clinton, that he married said Rebecca J. the defendant in the County aforesaid on the 2nd day of February 1860, and that they cohabited as husband and wife until the time hereinafter stated that by said marriage he has three children of the respective ages of four (4) two (2) and one(1) years.

That afterwards to wit on the 27th day of September 1864, he was drafted into the service and Army of the United States, that he entered and continued in said service until on or about the 10th day of September 1865. Having been all the time absent from home on duty At the time of his entering the service he left defendant at his home in charge of said children and trusting in her fidelity honesty and prudence But much to the surprise sorrow and astonishment of the plaintiff, after he left home and some weeks before his return she yielded to improper influences and for a considerable length of time kept company with and harboured in and about the house and home of plaintiff one Washington Woodruff a man of bad reputation

And further she during plaintiff's absence committed adultery with diverse persons especially with one Washington Woodruff by whom or some other person she has become pregnant with a bastard child.

Plaintiff therefore prays that on account of the misconduct of said defendant that he have a decree of Divorce dissolving and annulling the bonds of matrimony between himself and said defendant and that he have the custody of said children and other proper relief.

Comes said Plainfiff with J. Barner, his attorney and on motion the Defendant is three times solemnly called in Open Court and comes not but herein wholly makes defaulf and fails to answer or demur to said complaint although duly served with process for more than ten days prior to the first day of the present term of this court as shown by the Sheriff's return on the writ of Summons endorsed as follows, to-wit: (Insert), and a jury being waived by said Defendant the Court proceeds to hear the evidence and the Court after hearing the evidence adduced and being sufficiiently advised in the premises finds for the Plaintiff and that the matters and things contained in his complaint are fully sustained.
It is therefore considered, ordered, agjudged and decreed by the Court now here that the banns of matrimony hitherto existing between Plaintiff and Defendant be and are hereby dissolved to all intents and purposes and that the said Plaintiff be forever divorced from said Defendant, and on motion the Plaintiff is ordered and directed to take custody, control and maintenance of the three Children named in the Complaint, the Defendant having proved to be an improper person.
And futher ordered that the Plaintiff pay the costs of this siut taxed at $12.40.

Come the parties as heretofore appearing and now the Court being fully advised in the premises finds for the plaintiff that she be granted a decree of divorce from the defendant as the grounds alleged in her complaint and that she is a suitable person to have the care custody and education of the child named in the complaint and that she recover of the defendant the sum of $25.00 as her attorney fees and also her costs herein taxed at $ . The Court further finds that defendant shall have the privilege of visiting at all proper times the child named the complaint.

It is therefore considered and adjudged by the Court that the bands of matrimony existing between plaintiff and defendant be dissolved and the plaintiff be granted a divorce that she is a suitable person to have the care and custody of the child named in the complaint, to wit: Byron Snodgrass, until the further order of this court. That plaintiff have and recover of and from the defendant the sum of Twenty Five Dollars, as and for her attorney fees, as before found, and also her costs and charges in this behalf laid out and explained, taxed at $ . It is by the Court further considered and adjudged that defendant be, and he hereby is given Sixty days in which to pay said sum of Twenty Five dollars, and that the defendant be and he is hereby granted the privilege of visiting at all proper times the said child named in the complaint, to wit: Bryan Snodgrass.

Notice is hereby given that I intend to hold a lien on this judgement for the sum of Twenty five Dollars as and for legal services for plaintiff in taking this judgement.
