He opened one of the first banks in California in Stockton in 1849. After the beginning in a tent and then a wooden structure, the bank moved into one of the first brick buildings in Stockton. After changing hands a number of times, it later became the Hunter Square Branch of the Bank of America. He was one of the organizers of the Stockton Rural Cemetery"
