Brady was born in Vermillion County, Illinois. He came to Marion County, Iowa, with his family when he was nine years old.

Brady was 24, and living in Marion Co., when he enlisted as a Private in Co. K of the 15th Iowa Infantry on Jan 20, 1862. He was mustered into federal service on Feb 13, 1862.

With the 15th Iowa Infantry, Brady took part in the battles at Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg. During the battle of Corinth on Oct 3, 1862, Brady was severely wounded in his right side by two mini balls, but recovered. He was later promoted to Corporal on Feb 1, 1865.

Brady was mustered out of the service on July 24, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky.

He married Elizabeth Conry in 1867, and was the father of four children: Olive, Lauella, William, and Franklin.
