Barto Pioneer Passes to Reward
Joe Mekash of Barto township, 9 miles northwest of Greenbush, passes away Saturday at his home which he homesteaded in 1895.
He was one of the successful farmers until the floods came and destroyed his crop. The recurrence several times of these calamities took all his surplus and put him in arrears so that he was unable to make complete recovery.
Mr. Mekash was born in Bohemia February 4th, 1858 and came here as a homeseeker and made his home. His wife passed on four years ago exactly to the day, before he died. He is survived by one son and four daughters.
Funeral services were held from the Leo Catholic church Monday with a large number of his neighbors, warm friends of his, present.
